THE LOBSTER by Yorgos Lanthimos

The Plot: In a dystopian future, if a single person doesn’t find a romantic partner in 45 days he/she will be transformed into an animal. That’s the fate of David, who is taken to The Hotel in order to find his mate.

The cast: A fat Colin Farrell (one of the sexiest actors of the actuality) is perfect as the pathetic David and we feel that he enjoyed every minute of it; he really surprised me with this role. John C. Reilly and Ben Whishaw both give their roles honesty. In the female side, the best is Angeliki Papoulia as the unforgettable Heartless Woman; Léa Seydoux is a flawless bitch and Rachel Weisz is funny as David’s love interest.

The Movie: This might be the strangest movie of the year, but it’s also a very curious one. It’s slow pace may be a turn-off for many people, but if you resist beyond the first minutes you’re taken to a dark world, where love outside a relationship is forbidden, where hypocrisy is a way of surviving and where individuality is a dangerous way of living. This sounds familiar? Well, the problem is that many of the things that happen in this movie are happening on contemporary societies. Director Yorgos Lanthimos gives the proceedings a dark sense of humor and decadency that works perfectly in the context of the story. It’s without doubt an original unpredictable movie that make us think. For some strange reason, some things reminded me of THE SHINING and SOYLENT GREEN. This is dark, funny and strangely actual!

My Rate: 7 (from 1 to 10)

  1. He is definetely one of the geatest directors of our era. The one movie is better than the previous one! These days Lanthimos is in Greece preparing a movie with Emma Stone. It’s a production of the Greek National Opera so I'm very interested about it. You can learn details here https://www.nationalopera.gr/en/ I'm sure he is going to impress us again!
