THE GRUDGE by Nicolas Pesce

It all began in the early 2000s with JU-ON, a Japanese horror movie directed by Takashi Shimizu. In 2004, the Americans did their first remake and now, years later, we’re back to the franchise.

Like before, everyone who enters the house where a vengeful spirit lives is cursed and has to fight it in order to survive. As we all know, these Japanese inspired ghosts are usually women with long dark hair and director Nicolas Pesce doesn’t change it. In fact, it still works!

Don’t curse me, but I think this is the best movie of the all franchise. The plot isn’t original, but I like the way Pesce mix the all stories and how he creates a creepy atmosphere in the process, giving me a few goosebumps. We know how this works, but he manages to keep the suspense and the spirit is really spooky.

The cast lead by Andrea Riseborough and Demiàn Bichir is better and older than usual and it catches our attention. In supporting roles, horror veteran Lin Shaye and Jacki Weaver give terrific performances.

If you like horror movies where the atmosphere and suspense is more important than the usual gratuitous gore, this one is for you.

My Rate: 7 (from 1 to 10)
